IIMS is a registered Society to oversee management of four premier Maritime Training Institute in India and will eventually form the Indian Maritime University. The IIMS is now under the control of a Board of Governors headed by the Secretary, Ministry of Shipping with eminent personalities as its members. CRITICAL; I - IMPORTANT; D- DESIRED APPOINTMENT DETAILS. 1 Age of the applicants for the post of Director of IIMS should not be more than 60 years. Age may, however, be relaxed in case of deserving candidates. 2 The appointment will be on contractual basis for an initial period of three years, likely to be extended by two more years. 3 The fixed basic pay will be Rs.26000/- plus dearness pay 50% of basic and other allowances aggregating to amount of Rs.75,000/- approximately. DIRECTOR -KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES. Be responsible to the Competent Authority for the overall Administration, Academic, Financial Health and Development of the IIMS to ensure the highest standards of maintenance and academic excellence in delivering the above to - (a) Prepare plans and programmers including academic programmers for the development of IIMS. (b) Prescribe rules for admission of candidates to different courses. (c) Provide leadership to and be responsible for the general administration, discipline and management of Institutes of IIMS through their respective Heads. (d) To submit to the Competent Authority proposals to acquire or dispose off property and thereafter, execute the decision of the Board. Oversee the management of property held by IIMS. (e) To oversee preparation of the annual statement of accounts and other relevant records including the balance sheet of IIMS, and submit the same to the competent authority for approval and adoption. (f) To oversee the preparation of annual budget estimates of IIMS and work to improve the financial resources of the institute. (g) To prepare and submit to the competent authority, draft resolution and adopt, amend, vary or rescind from time to time byelaws for the regulation of, and for any purposes connected with the management and administration of the affairs of IIMS and for the furtherance of its objectives. The four maritime training institutes namely Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research, Mumbai T. S. Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata and Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Mumbai which were being run as Government Institutes under the control of the Director General of Shipping & Ministry of Shipping were given autonomous status in 2002 as the Indian Institute of Maritime Studies. These institutes were established sometimes in 1948-1949 by the Government of India. The Indian Institute of Maritime Studies, Mumbai has been registered as a ‘Society’ under the Societies Registration Act 1860 on 6th June 2002. It is expected that it will shortly be subsumed with the proposed Indian Maritime University as regional campus with continuing to administration, academic and other staff as IMU personnel. To meet the requirement of all trained manpower (officers) for the merchant maritime fleet, the education and training provided by the four maritime training institutes namely Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advance Marine Studies and Research, Mumbai, T. S. Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata and Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata and Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Mumbai, is stated below. 1. LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI COLLEGE OF MARITIME STUDIES & RESEARCH, MUMBAI This college offers post-sea education and training to merchant navy officers i.e. officers who have already served at sea for sometime after having completed pre-sea training in one or the other pre-sea training institute including the three pre-sea training institutes stated above. The average number of students admitted to this college in various courses per year as about 8000. The college is well equipped with the latest state-of-the-art simulators acquired from abroad. College has seven simulators, out of which three are full mission simulators. Eighth one is in being installed. The aggregate value of the three full mission simulators is about Rs.100 Crores. These simulators were given as Grant by the Govt. of Japan to Government of India. The various courses conducted by this college are listed below along with the duration each course. LIST OF COURSES
2. TRAINING SHIP CHANAKYA, NAVI MUMBAI This institute is ashore based academy providing education and training for becoming Nautical Officers. Prior to its coming into being, training to become Nautical Officer was imparted on a ship named Training Ship Rajendra, which was commissioned in 1972 after Training Ship Dufferin was scrapped. Training ship Dufferin was established in 1927 and on T. S. Dufferin education & training was imparted to both the Nautical as well Engineering cadets, till the Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Kolkata and Mumbai formerly known as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training were started for imparting education and training exclusively in marine engineering. Training Ship Chanakya is conduction two types of courses: I. A three-year course on completion of which a Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Sciences is awarded by Bombay University. The entrance qualification is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry & Maths. Selection for admission to this course is through Joint Entrance Examination of Indian Institutes of Technology. The total number of students admitted per year to the degree course is 90. II. 3˝ months pre-sea training course is also conducted which is followed by two to three year cadet-ships on a ship. The admission to this course is by sponsorship of candidates by the shipping companies or their managers/agents in India. The total number of students admitted per course to the pre-sea course is 120. The training provided is completely residential. The training programmes cover extra curricular activities and physical fitness programmes, besides the course curriculum of Bombay University and requirements of IMO. 3. MARINE ENGINEERING & RESEARCH INSTITUTE, KOLKATA This institute conducts a four-year Bachelor’s degree course in marine engineering. Degree is awarded by Jadavpur University. The entrance qualification is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The selection is made through the Joint Entrance Examination of the Indian Institutes of Technology. The training provided is completely residential. The training programmes, covers extra curricular activities and physical fitness programmes, besides the curriculum of Jadavpur University and IMO requirements. The total number of students admitted per year are 130. 4. MARINE ENGINEERING & RESEARCH INSTITUTE, MUMBAI This institute conducts a one-year marine engineering training course to graduates in Mechanical Engineering/Naval Architecture. They must have passed their technical degree either from Indian Institute of Technology or a college approved by AITCE. The admission is on the basis of sponsorship of candidates by the various shipping companies or their managers/agents in India. The training provided is completely residential. The training programmes covers extra curricular activities and physical fitness programmes, besides the course curriculum covers the IMO requirements. The total number of students admitted per year are 105. |
