4.14 SUMMARY
Present chapter deals with analysis of the selected commodities and demand estimation
for the years 2006-7 and 2011-12. Consultants studied exiting traffic pattern by Road,
Rail, Pipeline and Coastal Shipping. The major commodities that are being moved by
Coastal Shipping are crude, POL, coal, iron ore, iron & steel, cement contributing to more
than 90 percent of the total coastal traffic. Besides these commodities, other commodities
such as fertilisers, food grains, LNG and general cargo are also examined to understand
the possibilities of moving these commodities by coastal shipping. The methodology
adopted to estimate future traffic considers commodity specific production, consumption,
imports/exports, existing modal share and growth rates at national level. These
commodities are apportioned to the corresponding ports based on the observed movement
pattern. Further, impact of future projects (industrial activities etc) in the vicinity of the
port service area were also considered.
Crude will continue to be at 16 million tonnes (present level) as the domestic production
of crude oil assumed to be constant for the coming the years.
Traffic estimates indicate POL movement by coastal shipping will reach 25 million
tonnes by 2006-07 with Sikka as the loading port handling majority of the POL traffic
among minor ports.
Coal movement by coastal shipping is estimated to reach 20 million tonnes with loading
ports as Paradip, Haldia, Vizag and discharge ports as Ennore and Tuticorin.
Iron Ore movement by coastal shipping is estimated as 9.75 million tonnes by 2006-07
and the load ports will be Vizag, New Mangalore, Panaji and discharge port will be
Magdalla, Dharamtar, Revdanda, Tuticorin, Bhavnagar and Pipavav.

Iron and Steel movement by coastal shipping is estimated as 0.76 million tonnes by 2006-
07 with load ports as Magdalla, Revedanda, Vizag and discharge ports will be Cochin,
Mumbai and Pipavav
Movement of cement through coastal shipping is estimated as 8.65 million tonnes with
majority of the movement happening on the west coast ports like Mul Dwaraka,
Jaffrabad, Pipavav, Porbandar being the load ports and Ulwa Belapur, Magdalla,
Dharamtar, Ratnagiri, Azhikkal, Cuddalore, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT as discharge
ports. Cement appears to have better prospects to move by coastal shipping.
The movement of fertilisers and foodgrains is estimated to be insignificant. Large
quantities of food grains are moving from one region to another region by other modes of
transport in a fragmented market environment. However, movement by coastal shipping
may increase if vertical integration of the producers, wholesalers and importers takes
place.
In the given situation, coastal shipping accounts for less than 1 percent general cargo
movement in India. The scenario will change, if the penetration of containerisation
increases and the establishment of international transhipment port.
