Subject : Ship Security Alert System - Web Based Graphic Display


In accordance with the provision of regulation 6.2 Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS Convention 74 as amended, the Communication Centre of the Directorate General of Shipping is entrusted with the task to receive notification of security alert from ships. In addition this Centre communicates with ships /authorities so as to exchange information on urgent matters including search and rescue. 

It is recognized that identification of ships that is in need of assistance and ships that can provide such assistance is of great importance for speedy response. The position of ships could be obtained in many ways but when located graphically its position is available at all the times on the screen available with communication centre Instant identification of position of ship(s) requiring help and ship(s) that can   provide help greatly enhances the capabilities of person monitoring development of urgent situation and significantly helps in quick delivery of information to appropriate person/authorities. 

In view of foregoing it has been decided that ships security alert system should be capable to convey vessels position through a 'Graphic Web based system'. Indian ship owner, concerned equipment manufacturers and service providers are requested to take appropriate measures so that ships position is available graphically in the communication centre within fifteen days from the date of issue of this circular. The non-compliance with this requirement will be viewed seriously and the No Objection Certificate issued for fitting a particular Ship Security Alert System is liable to be withdrawn. 

This is issued with the approval of the Nautical Adviser to the Government of India.
