Subject: Maritime Security Advisory to ships/vessels transiting Gulf of Aden


For the attention of Ship Owners, Ship Managers, Shipping Agents, Ship Masters, Charterers, Ship Builders, Ship Breakers Associations, Classification Societies, recognized by Directorate General of Shipping, Non-exclusive Survey companies, Insurance Companies, Coastal State including Administrators of Union territories/Islands and Maritime boards, Major and Minor Ports, Sailing and Fishing Vessels Associations, Allied Offices of the Directorate General of Shipping, National Hydrographic Office (NHO)


Having received representations from INSA, FOSMA and MASSA in connection with the Advisory issued through the Merchant Shipping Notice No. 32 of 2009 dated 24/09/2009, the Director General of Shipping has reviewed the matter and in partial modification strongly advises all Indian flag ships and ships carrying Indian seafarers to utilize the escort services being provided by the Indian naval ships in the Gulf of Aden to the maximum extent. In the event such merchant vessels are unable to conform to the Indian warships schedule for any reason, they are advised to take the escort schedules of warships of other countries that carry out escort through out the length of the IRTC.

Ship owners are also advised to undertake active anti-piracy measures when transiting in vicinity of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden as per various advisories issued by this Directorate and the enclosed annexure.
