Subject: Guidelines on use of fire hoses of less than 64 mm and
            couplings other than instantaneous type: Exemptions regarding
 

   
     Since some shipowners are approaching this Directorate for the subject exemption and the Directorate is in the process of revising the Fire Fighting Appliance Rules 1991 incorporating all the SOLAS 74 amendments till date, the following guidelines in line with the draft Fire Fighting Appliance rules are being issued:-

 

  1. Hose diameter shall be maximum of 64 mm and minimum of 38 mm and they shall be lined. This exemption is in lieu of the relevant part in Rule 60, para(2) of  the Fire Fighting Appliance Rules, 1991

 

  1. Fire main, water service pipes and hydrants: All water pipes and fire hydrants required to be provided under these rules shall be so placed that in addition to complying with other requirements specified in the Fire Fighting Appliance Rules 1991, fire hoses may easily be coupled to them. Where bayonet type of couplings are used, a suitable spanner close to hydrant and permanently secured, is to be provided. This exemption is in lieu of the relevant part in Rule 59 of  the Fire Fighting Appliance Rules, 1991
     

4.  This supersedes Eng Circular 19, 61, 108 on the above subject.    
 

    This issues with the approval of competent authority
