Sub: Protection of the external high pressure fuel delivery lines


 The Directorate General of Shipping has adopted the SOLAS 74 Amendments to Chapter II -2, Regulation 15 which enters into force on 1st July 2003.

All Ship-owners are to comply with requirements of SOLAS Regulation 15.2.9 to 15.2.12 of Chapter II -2 regarding protection of all external high pressure fuel oil delivery lines between the high pressure fuel pumps and fuel injectors on engines having an output of 375 k w or more, for all ships constructed before 1st July 1998 of 500 GT and above and which are engaged in international voyages.

1. All external high - pressure fuel delivery lines between the high-pressure fuel pumps and fuel injectors are to be protected with a jacketed piping system capable of containing fuel from a high pressure line failure. The jacketed pipe to include an outer pipe in to which the high-pressure fuel pipe is placed forming a permanent assembly.


2. The above jacketed piping system shall also include a means for collection of leakages and arrangement to be provided for an alarm in case of a fuel line failure.

3. The alarm system to be provided with visible and audible alarm at monitoring station or control station of main engines.

Although the above requirements are applicable to al ships of 500 gross tonnages or more engaged on international voyages, owners of all offshore vessels and coastal vessels are also urged to comply with the Regulations for reasons of safety.
