ENG CIRCULAR - 007
|
No: ENG/EXAM-17(26)/2000 Date
: 29th June 2001
Since the MEO 1998 Examination
rules have come into force and there has been an express provision
to change over the entire examination system, a number of steps
have been since taken to change over to the new Examination system.
However, in order to ensure that the candidates who were sailing
or who had completed their sea time for appearing in the Class
I MEO Examination under 1989 Rules are not put to any difficulty,
it was decided to continue with the MEO Class I Examination under
the old rules. The MEO Class II Examination under the new rules
is commencing from July 2001. In order to keep parity with existing
practices and to enable change over smoothly from the old system
to the new system a fair period should be provided as a buffer
between the deadline (1st February 2002) and the change over.
To accomplish this it has now been decided at the Directorate
to terminate the MEO Class I Examination under the 1989 rules
from October 2001. Consequently, the last Examination under MEO
1989 Examination rules shall be held in September 2001. Any such
candidate who has appeared in the examination till then, under
MEO 1989 Examination rules will be given credit for the subjects
passed to enable appear in the Class II examination under MEO
1998 Examination Rules. Such of those candidates who have not
appeared in the Class I examination, but are eligible to appear
for the Class I examination under the MEO 1989 Examination Rules
will also be eligible to appear in the Class II examination under
MEO 1998 Examination Rules. The procedure for conversion to the
1998 system is clearly outlined in Circular 11 of 1998 and 6 of
2000.
This information may be given
wide publicity to all shipping companies, institutions and candidates
to ensure that there is a smooth change over and no difficulties
are faced by the aspiring candidates in effecting this transition.
