ENG CIRCULAR 19

Dated: December 11, 2003
Sub: Merchant Shipping (Fire Appliances) Rules1969/ 1990 Exemption from bayonet couplings.

It is observed that a number of existing Indian flagships are fitted with Bayonet type of coupling, and the shipping companies are approaching the Directorate for the issuance of exemption for continuing the vessel with Bayonet type of coupling.

In view of the above, the Chief Surveyor with the Govt. of India has granted exemption from Bayonet type of coupling in lieu of Instantaneous type of coupling on all existing vessels, however a suitable spanner for the purpose of fitment of fire hose shall be provided at each fire hydrant.

However ships, which are newly built, are required to have Instantaneous type of coupling. The requirement of Instantaneous type of coupling, unless the Directorate gives specific exemption, shall apply to ships the keels of which are laid or which were at a similar stage of construction on or after 1 July 1998.
