Engineering Circular No. 41

NO: ENG/FFA/436

Dated November 03, 2004

Sub: Stamping of Hydraulic Pressure Testing of CO2 Cylinder

During the Cargo Ship Safety Equipment survey, it was observed on some occasions that the CO2 Cylinders did not have the stamping of date after Hydraulic Pressure Testing of the cylinders; instead each cylinder was provided with a paper sticker indicating the date of test.

2.         As pasting of stickers is not a routine practice, (please refer to the Engineering Circular No.17 date 08.10.2003) it is advised that the date of pressure testing must be stamped on each cylinder after they have under gone satisfactory hydraulic pressure testing.

3.         As required by the Gas Cylinders Rules, 1981 marking on cylinders :

          a)   shall be clearly and permanently marked in accordance with the following condition by
stamping, engraving or similar process :

                 i)  On the shoulder of the cylinder which shall be enforced by forging or   other means, or

ii) On such a part which is inseparably bound with the cylinder and which is not, or only, negligibly effected by the stresses due to the gas pressure within it.

          b)  The nameplate shall not be affixed to the cylinder by soldering if there is a risk of corrosion or
               embrittlement.

         c)
In conjunction with the original marking, space shall be provided for stamping the test

date of the periodic inspection.

        d)   Markings shall be so carried out and the letters and numerals used shall be of such shape
and size that the marking is clear and easily readable and does not give place for misreading.

        e)   Every cylinder shall be marked with :

             i)  The date of the last hydrostatic test or hydrostatic stretch test, as the case may be.
